Against the Waves is an extremely low-resolution image made up of only 54 pixels that displays the upper body of a woman swimming in the Pacific Ocean as seen from above. The liminal image is nearly undecipherable, but when viewed from afar, the figure can be recognized with the visual cues of the flesh tones and the swimming movement. Once the image is recognized by someone, they will always recognize it. The display was created with LED circuit boards sticking out of an aluminum panel, with each LED projecting light back onto the panel. This process of projecting makes for a softer image. The arrangement of pixels is random so that the viewers do not focus on the grid.
